Waters Upton MIs - Woolley, Robert and Mary

My research suggests that Robert Wooley was baptised 20 May 1798 at High Ercall (abode “Tearn”) in Shropshire. Robert married Mary Pascall at Wellington, Shropshire on 6 Feb 1826. Mary was baptised at Waters Upton on 25 Mar 1799, daughter of William Pascal and his wife Sarah. Robert and Mary lived at Waters Upton, where Robert worked as an agricultural labourer; they can be found there on the census returns of 1841, 1851 and 1861. In 1841 and 1861 Mary’s sister Sarah Pascall, who was recorded on census returns as “deaf and dumb,” was also living with Robert and Mary. The 1871 census shows that Sarah continued to live with her sister Mary following Robert’s death.

Waters Upton MIs - Woolley, Robert and Maria

Richard Woolley married Maria Pitchford in 1880, their marriage being registered at Wellington in the September quarter of that year. The 1881 census shows the couple living at Waters Upton. Richard, 27, a butcher, was born at Waters Upton while his wife, aged 20, was born in Newcastle under Lyme. By 1891 the couple were living at Sitch Lane (nowadays Sytch Lane) just north of Waters Upton in Ercall Magna parish; they had two children, Sarah M Woolley (5, born at Waters Upton) and Minnie E Woolley (1, born at Wellington), and Richard was working as an agricultural labourer. By 1901, when the family was still in Sitch Lane (Maria had given birth to four more children there), Richard was working as a butcher again.
