Census returns from 1851 to 1881 show that John Rider was born at Crudgington in about 1823, but lived in Wellington where he was a surgeon and general practitioner. He was baptised at High Ercall on 25 Sep 1822. His wife Mary Tennant was born about 1827 in Everton, Lancashire; her marriage to John took place at St Paul’s Church in Princes Park on 14 Apr 1858 and was registered at West Derby. The register entry shows that John’s father, also named John, was a farmer, while Mary’s father Edward Tennant was a merchant.
The will of John Rider, surgeon, who died at his home, Crescent House in Wellington, was proved at the Principal Registry in London on 6 Apr 1887 by his widow Mary and his son John Edward Wase Rider, solicitor, of 8 New Square, Lincoln’s Inn, Middlesex. The value of John’s personal estate was £5,028 8s. 8d.
